If you're looking to take your hill-walking skills to the next level then our one day 'introduction to mountain navigation' course is just for you. We'll introduce you to the map and compass, explain what they do, how to use them and how they work with each other. We'll teach you about route planning using paper and digital maps and cover any other topics you might need help with to turn you into a confident and competent outdoor person.
When you're ready to progress we can help you move onto the National Navigation Award Scheme Bronze Navigator and Silver Navigator Awards.
Our mountain navigation training and map reading courses run throughout the year on a date that's convenient for you. Based in Snowdonia, we also run regular courses in the Peak District. We'll explain in advance what will happen over the weekend and ensure you've got the right gear for an enjoyable time in the countryside. This course takes place over one day and is held entirely outdoors so be sure to bring everything you need with you.

How many people will be on the course?
We set a limit of eight people on our courses however we often run with fewer.
How long does the course last?
Our 'introduction to mountain navigation' course takes place over one day usually running from around 8am to 4pm.
IS THERE AN assessment?
No there's no assessment for our one day 'introduction to navigation' courses so you can simply enjoy learning without any fear of assessment.
I'm not sure which course is right for me - can I see the syllabus for each award?
Of course! The requirements for each award are specified by The National Navigation Award Scheme and can be found below. Don't be too worried if you don't understand all the terminology as that's what our instructors are there for but it might help you decide which level to start at.
