Trainee Mountain Leaders

 

MountainXperience is keen to support trainee Mountain Leaders on their pathway to becoming fully qualified outdoor professionals.

The Mountain Leader qualification was created for outdoor people wanting to lead groups in the hills and mountains of the UK. Mountain Leaders operate across the country with all sorts of groups of people; from youth groups and school children to outdoor instructors and OAPs. 

If you’ve completed your Mountain Leader training and are looking to build up your experience particularly related to group management, then you’d be very welcome to join any of our adventures. These are unlikely to count as Quality Mountain Days however they are valuable opportunities to develop your leadership skills.
 

You’d be working alongside a fully qualified Mountain Leader who will ultimately be responsible for our clients but you’ll get a real hands-on feel for what the day-to-day job is like. They’ll also be able to share their experiences of their Mountain Leader story and offer advice to help you progress towards your assessment. Whilst these are unpaid opportunities you will gain valuable outdoor experience under the supervision of a qualified Mountain Leader.

All we expect from you is that you act professionally as if you were a qualified Mountain Leader. You’re welcome to get as involved as you wish however you will definitely learn more by taking part rather than just standing back and watching. 

Trainee Mountain Leaders are welcome on any of our adventures in Snowdonia or the Peak District. Simply find a date that suits and fill in the form below to apply.

IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATION:
The form below isn’t just for a random expression of interest! It’s for you to ask to shadow a specific event taking place on a specific date. Please browse our website, look for an activity you would like to shadow, find a date that fits and then complete the form below. Telling us you’re available for ‘any Saturday in July’ or that you’d like to shadow ‘sometime in 2024’ won’t work.

    I am in my consolidation period as a trainee ML. It was a great couple of days spent shadowing Simon on the Bronze NNAS weekend. Simon gave a good insight into life as a ML and actively encouraged me to engage with the group, which enhanced the whole experience. It was really useful to see how Simon managed the group as this was a course and they needed to be engaged and not just having a lovely walk in the countryside. I would recommend any trainee MLs to shadow Simon on any of his activities.
