Our Hill Skills course from Mountain Training is your key to getting started in countryside and moorland walking. Aimed at beginners, no previous hill walking experience is required.

 

The course takes place entirely outdoors and cover a range of topics including what clothes you should wear, what equipment you should carry with you, how to plan your day out, what routes you can take, understanding the weather, how to navigate using paper and digital mapping and dealing with emergencies in the outdoors.

If mountains are more you things, then our Mountain Skills course from Mountain Training is the ideal choice. It’s designed for people interested in exploring mountainous terrain and wanting to develop their confidence in the mountains.

 

It’s a great way to learn the essential skills you will need to enjoy the mountains in the UK safely. Whether you’d like to feel more confident using a map or you have ambitions to climb Everest, the Mountain Skills course is a great first step.

On the National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) Bronze Navigator course you’ll cover essential map reading skills and learn how to use ‘handrail features’ like paths and walls to guide you along your way as well learning how to measure distance, understand grid references and plan your own routes.

 

You’ll also learn the basics of how to use a compass and how to use it with your map to ensure you don’t get lost. The Bronze Navigator Award will take you from relying on friends or guidebooks to being able to plan a walk and follow it successfully.

On the National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) Silver Navigator Award you’ll start to leave the paths behind and navigate in open country using your map and compass.

 

As your confidence increases you’ll learn more advanced compass skills and add timing and pacing into the mix too. The Silver Award takes place on more difficult terrain than the Bronze Award and away from easy-to-follow paths and trails.
