Originally published in 2009, this fascinating paperback aims to give readers access to the remains of hundreds of historic aircraft that still lie at crash sites on the moors and mountains of the British Isles.
Aircraft Wrecks: A Walker’s Guide covers almost 500 air crash sites across the UK with emphasis placed on those located within open access land. The book includes grid references, up-to-date site descriptions and recent photographs. The locations are arranged geographically with each chapter featuring details of all major recorded air crashes to have occurred in that particular region.
The book covers all areas of the UK broken down as South West Moors (15 records), Wales (93 records). Peak District (82 records). Pennines (76 records), Lake District (32 records), North Yorkshire Moors (23 records). Isle of Man (18 records), Scottish Lowlands (47 records). Scottish Highlands and Islands (85 records) and Ireland (19 records).
Representing the main hill and mountain areas of the British Isles, each sections is introduced with a brief narrative describing its geographical characteristics and aviation background, discussing the factors and trends behind the concentration of losses within the area and noting any especially significant incidents. Individual entries include precise location details including additional references for scattered major items of wreckage and any relevant notes to aid finding or interpreting the crash site, together with details of the aircraft, names and fates of those onboard and the circumstances of the loss.
Why do we like this book so much? Well as the locations are often in difficult to access, open land, it makes them perfect for practicing your navigation skills! In fact we often visit a popular, out-of-the-way crash site in the Peak District on our National Navigation Award Scheme Silver Navigator Award and Straight to Silver Navigator Award courses. Using the accurate grid references given in the book, you can explore remote terrain to hone your map and compass skills.
