Max grew up in Dorset, walking in the New Forest and along the beautiful Jurassic coast. After university she travelled the world with her husband Tom before getting a real taste of long-distance hiking in New Zealand. They set their sights on Everest Base Camp and then the 2,189-mile Appalachian Trail. Now they spend their time in the mountains of North Wales – where they call home.
In her spare time Max enjoys painting, climbing and hiking in the Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park. As well as a qualified Mountain Leader, she is a freelance copywriter and editor of a magazine for the charity Reach, for people with upper limb differences, for which she also volunteers as a mentor for Reach children.
Max was born with an upper limb difference herself. It’s made her a great problem-solver, gifted her with empathy and a keen motivation to break down barriers to inclusivity and representation. She is proud to represent disability as a Mountain Leader and loves to see clients thrive and grow in confidence with every step.
Along with husband Tom, Max is a member of the Aberglaslyn Mountain Rescue Team and a navigator for the local Search and Rescue Dogs Association (SARDA) Wales – with aspirations of becoming a dog handler herself.
What have MountainXperience clients said about Max?
Tom and Max our 2 guides were amazing. I had some issues going up the steep sections, but both of them supported me both physically and emotionally. I can honestly say that I wouldn’t have made it up to the summit without them. The weather was horrendous, cloudy, windy and raining, but no-one can control that can they?!?!

We had such a great experience with the guides Max and Tom who were both so well knowledged, friendly and encouraging. Without them I know my youngest would had definitely turned around but instead completed the climb and has a memory for life

My guides were Tom and Max. They were truly unbelievable guides, I was made to feel so welcome and safe. I had the most amazing experience and I recommend it to anyone.

The guides were friendly and encouraging – a special mention for Sadie and Max who made the challenge more enjoyable with their skills and company. After getting lost on the descent many years ago and finding ourselves in a precarious position it was great to have the support of our guides so we could concentrate on enjoyment. Definitely recommend Mountain Xperience and am tempted to try something more challenging next time!
