Be Adventure Smart

AdventureSmart UK is a nationwide safety campaign aimed at those using the outdoors. Its plan is to reduce the number of often avoidable incidents which the rescue and emergency services have to deal with every year.

Experts from leading safety and sporting organisations around the country have developed a comprehensive set of safety messages to provide the essential information needed for people to get outdoors, confident that they are fully prepared for a great day out.

The campaign launched in Wales in 2018 and started as a two-year project funded by the Welsh Government. It continues thanks to additional contributions from Snowdonia National Park Authority, British Mountaineering Council and Welsh Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

AdventureSmart works by getting you to think about three key messages before you set off:

  • Do I have the right GEAR?
  • Do I know what the WEATHER will be like?
  • Am I confident I have the KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS for the day?

You don’t need to have the latest high performance super expensive jacket to be adventure smart. All you need to do is put a little bit of thought into what the conditions might be on the day and pack your bag with just enough to ensure you can cope with whatever the weather might bring.

We are known for being obsessed with the weather in the UK! This makes it even more surprising that people often don’t pay enough attention to how it might affect their days in the mountains. Whatever your activity being prepared for the weather can make a huge difference.

Whatever your planned activity for the day, be honest with yourself about you and your companions’ knowledge, fitness and ability. We all like to think that we are fitter or indeed more capable than we are but it always pays to be honest.
