Merfyn (better known as ‘Smyrff’) is an experienced Summer and Winter Mountain Leader with a passion for sharing outdoor experiences in and around Eryri / Snowdonia and beyond whether on foot or by mountain bike.
A local boy from Penrhyndeudraeth, Smyrff is a first language Welsh speaker. He loves venturing further afield and exploring the mountains of the world and has completed overseas trips to Mont Blanc, Toubkal, Kilimanjaro, Mulhacén in Spain and Piz Boè in Italy.
As well as his hiking and biking work, you’ll often find Smyrff working on TV and radio projects. He recently completed the North Wales Pilgrim’s Way with Radio Cymru for Children in Need and regularly works on S4C’s walking programme, Am Dro.
Smyrff also runs his own outdoor business Hike & Bike Snowdonia / Heicio a Beicio Eryri. He runs lowland walks and mountain trips for local schools in North Wales and is fortunate to spend a lot of time in Scotland working on winter skills courses. Smyrff is an Eryri and Bannau Brycheiniog Ambassador. Keen to work with the next generation of mountaineers, Smyrff works on Mountain Leader Training and Assessments and is one of the few tutors who runs Welsh language courses.
Smyrff is a valued volunteer and long-term Mountain Rescue Team member with South Snowdonia Search & Rescue Team / Tîm Achub a Chwilio De Eryri.

We had Keith and Smyrff take us to the summit of Snowdon last week – we had fabulous weather!! NOT – but they made it hugely enjoyable and memorable for our group of 11 trekkers! Excellent knowledge and very much took care of our well being. We all had a great time.
